BOMB CALORIMETER
MAKE DINESH SCIENTIFIC
DESCRIPTION:
A bomb calorimeter is a scientific instrument used to measure the heat of combustion of a substance. It’s commonly used in chemistry, biology, and food science to determine the calorific value of fuels, foods, and other organic materials. Here’s a detailed description of its components and working principles:
COMPONENTS
BOMB (COMBUSTION CHAMBER):
A sturdy, sealed metal vessel (usually made of stainless steel) designed to withstand high pressures.
Contains the sample to be combusted.
Equipped with an oxygen inlet to ensure complete combustion of the sample.
SAMPLE HOLDER:
A small crucible or cup that holds the substance tested.
IGNITION SYSTEM:
An electrically heated wire or fuse that ignites the sample.
WATER JACKET (OUTER VESSEL):
Surrounds the bomb and contains a known quantity of water to absorb the heat released during combustion.
THERMOMETER OR TEMPERATURE SENSOR:
Measures the temperature change in the water with high precision.
STIRRER:
Ensures uniform distribution of heat within the water for accurate temperature readings.
PRESSURE GAUGE (OPTIONAL):
Measures the pressure changes within the bomb during combustion.
